Organisations are coming under pressure from government, the communities in which they operate and other interested parties to show greater transparency and disclose enhanced information on environmental matters.

EMAS, the Eco-Management and Audit Scheme, is a voluntary EU initiative aiming to encourage organisations to manage their impact on the environment and to publicly report progress on their environmental performance and is controlled by EU Regulation 761/2000.

The Regulation, revised in April 2001, involves implementing an environmental management system and preparing an environmental statement.
The management system must then be verified and the environmental statement validated by an independent accredited verifier.

Registration to EMAS is ideal for organisations wishing to demonstrate their credibility in the environmental field.
